Intro:
Hello everyone, getting this out the way but this is Gav’s friend Jake. I'm filling in for Mr. Gungle Kunk today as he's busy. If you actually read these reviews and read the Art Of Drowning and the 10 random punk songs reviews you would know AFI is one of my favorite bands EVER. So what better way to celebrate my debut review than with the debut of the permanent lineup of A Fire Inside (yes that’s what AFI stands for). Anyways let's get into this short masterpiece (I know a thing about those).
Thoughts & Feelings?
This is an EP of only 4 songs and lasts a whole 13 minutes (Just like me!!) but of those 4, 2 are classics, one is a Misfits cover, and one is just plain GREAT. This is also the debut of the “Horror Era” of AFI (Circa 1998-2003) and gives us the more Hardcore aspects that I've grown to love with this band.
This EP makes me feel like I'm listening to the Misfits if Glenn Danzig had the voice of that annoying Chihuahua next door. And that Chihuahua SCREAMS SOMETIMES LETS GOOOO BABYYYYYYYYY. Anyways let's get to the songs as there's only 4.
Smash or Pass?
Fall Children - SMAAASH. HOLY OPENING RIFF. This song starts with a slow riff then explodes into the AFI we all know and love. Davey sings incredibly here and so do the rest of the boys. Definitely a great Punk song. CREEPY ENDING 😨
Halloween - SMASH. Ok well here's the Misfits cover if the title of the EP didn't give that away. Well anyways lets get to the song. HOLY BAAAAASSSSSSSSS. THE BASS IS SO FUCKING GOOD THANK YOU HUNTER. Along with this bass comes the vocals we should expect from Davey and the great instrumentations of the rest of the band. Another creepy ass ending wtf is up with that. Except this one last OVER A MINUTE. Like boys I get this is a halloween EP but come on.
The Boy Who Destroyed The World - S M A S H. Fuck you listen to this song. There is no review to put this in words. “Remember When, Remember When” You BETTER remember AFI after this. These guys ROCK. Also this song was in Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, pretty neat.
Totalimmortal - SSSSMMMMAAAASSSHHH. This song gained a lot of traction after the 2004 compilation black album sent these old AFI tracks to the new fan base. This song is INCREDIBLE. Again if i may. Ahem HOLY FUCKING BBAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSS. HUNTER YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE THAT FUCKING GOOD. BUT with that compliment it is VERY important to point out just how great everyone in this band is from Davey’s vocals, to Jade’s guitar, to Adams drums, and of course Hunter's bass.
Conclusion
Like I said, this is my first review on the site and it truly is an honor to be able to do one of my favorite bands of all time in AFI. This is just an EP but knowing what comes immediately after (The Art Of Drowning) and in the near future (HEEEEYYYYYY MISSSS MURRRDERRR CAN I) it's great to listen to these older songs and talk about them with you guys. If you haven’t already check out these guys. Whether you like Punk, Hardcore, Emo, or Goth, AFI has something for you and as someone who enjoys all of the genres above I guarantee that they do them all VERY well.
