Intro
Happy Tuesday everyone. Can't believe it's taken me this long to review a slayer album. I figured I would go ahead and go with their most iconic album. Holy fucking was 1986 a great year for music. This band is very fucking sick, and I'm hardly every disappointed listening to their songs. All of them are fast as fuck, thrashy and completely batshit wild. It's awesome, and let's get into what I think of this iconic metal album.
Thoughts & Feelings?
This album makes me feel like I'm being chased by Freddy Krueger. Just knife hands and all chasing me down hallway and hallway. I'm in a never ending nightmare while goblins and demons are watching in the stands laughing and jeering. This shit is the most EVIL fucking album I've ever heard. Anyway don't ask me to elaborate further.
I fucking LOVE this album. If I'm ever feeling in a particular evil mood, I'm going to throw this on. I would never ever listen to this album if I was in a family gathering event, or someone passes me the aux chord and I have to play some shit people will actually enjoy- this is NOT what I will play. This song is fast as fuck, metal as fuck, evil as fuck, and holy fuck would I get punched out for playing stuff like this in public. It's fucking PERFECT, though.
Smash or Pass?
Angel of Death - Fucking SMMAAAAAAASSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH. This is probably my favourite fucking Slayer song of all time. It's absolutely batshit insane, fast as fuck, sounds like nightmare fuel, and has the coolest fucking breakdown riff I've ever heard in my life. Absolutely the grooviest fucking song I've ever heard during the second half. It's such a great fucking song, it's so iconic, that scream at the beginning is the most metal thing I've ever heard in my fucking life. My only complaint is the ending solo. I think it's just a bit too unhinged for me.
Piece By Piece - SMMMMMMMAAAAASSSSSHHHHHHH. This song is so FUCKING sick. Literally the darkest, most fucking unhinged absolutely murderous song I've ever heard. Imagine playing this song in a church, you'd get fucking kicked out immediately. This song is short as fuck and fast as fuck. It's awesome.
Necrophobic - SMMMAAASSSSSHHHHHH. I have definitely heard this song. Another song that goes fucking crazy fast and I have no idea what the fuck is going on. When the song slows down, that part is fucking AWESOME. I love breakdowns like that- then immediately into your batshit fucking solo where everything goes nuts to butts.
Altar of Sacrifice - SMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHH. This one isn't as fast but it sounds so fucking evil, Slayer does such a great job of making everything sound so fucking demonic. I could easily see these songs being used for like a live action Doom movie. "Enter to the realm of Satan", holy fuck that line goes SO hard it's awesome. This song is so fucking groovy it's awesome. Absolutely the most evil song you've ever heard in your life.
Jesus Saves - SMMMMMMMMMAAAAAASSSSSSSHHHHH. FUCKING LOVE TRANSITIONS. I fucking love when songs transition into more songs, that shit is awesome, keep that up it's fucking sick. This is another standard fast ass song that sounds very similar to Angel of Death to me.
Criminally Insane - SMASH. I'm not crazy into this one but it's amazing regardless. Another solo that is just... I have absolutely no idea anymore at this point. Play as many notes as fast as possible and rip the whammy bar harder than your dick in December.
Reborn - SMMASSSHHHHH. I just want to fucking mosh to these songs. It's a good thing this album is so short because I can't remember some of these songs. They follow the same kind of format which works for the most part. Fast ass everything with a ripping vocal line, then all of a sudden the most random sounds being played as a solo, rinse repeat. It's great but I want a little more after the last couple songs.
Epidemic - SMMMMMAAAASSSSHHHHH. Legit thought this was a continuation of the last song just because of how these songs sound. Honestly a few of these songs give me HEAVY blackened vibes, so possibly Metallica were really inspired by this album to take some of these cool riffs and try them out on their own.
Postmortem - SMMMMMMMAAAAASSSSHHHHH. Oh I fucking love this song. You could literally put this song on and immediately anyone that's ever heard Slayer will immediately go "Is this Slayer...???" because you can just HEAR it. You can hear it in the tone, in the riffs, in everything it's just SO Slayer. Of course the lyrics are fucking dark as shit so we're filling every checkmark here.
Raining Blood - SMMMMMMMAAAAAAASSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I mean this one is pretty fucking obvious. I'm not going to go too much into this song just because it's "THE" Slayer song. Yeah it's fucking amazing and it's perfect- I get it. I just don't want to listen to it because I've heard it 3 million times. A perfect song to end the album.
Conclusion
Feeling particularly evil? Feeling like some high energy thrash metal to kick your heart and make you want to start drawing pentagrams and shit? This is the fucking album for you. This shit is fast, evil, gory, and absolutely perfect. I wouldn't change anything about this album. It's fucking perfect. Give it a listen because this is one of the big 4 metal bands of the 90's.
RANK: A+
What do you guys think? Is Slayer too much for you? Sorry I didn't give any medals to Raining Blood, I just felt like that was the obvious choice. I wanted to give some spotlight to the other songs that I fucking love. Happy Tuesday everyone, hope you're all doing good. Much love!
