Intro
I know what you're thinking. "Oh Blur, they sing Song 2. I fucking love that song- these guys must sound punk rock like and fast paced"- absolutely not. The entire reason I'm doing a review of this album is because my dad and I had a conversation yesterday where we were naturally talking about music, and he said that he hates Song 2 because it sounds NOTHING like how Blur sounds- so I thought to myself fuck it I'll review a Blur album next. Sounds like fun. Anyway yeah this band is VERY much your standard British pop band. Definitely the Kinks vibes here.
Thoughts & Feelings?
This album makes me feel like I'm in Alice in Wonderland, but it's a TV cartoon version where it's a special about Alice in Wonderland and I'm in the montage section where I'm being chased all around Wonderland by all these crazy creatures and shit. Like a Scooby Doo chase scene but I'm in Alice in Wonderland. I don't know man don't ask me to elaborate further.
It's a shame this band doesn't sound ANYTHING like Song 2- because I fucking love that song. It's punk rock and fast and action packed. That is NOT this band. This band reminds me of The Monkeys. They sound very fucking similar. All of these songs are your standard pop alternative rock by British blokes. Not that that's a bad thing, these songs are actually pretty decent. It just won't be the punk rock that you'd expect. It's more like kinda slow pop rock and it's not bad to be honest. Pretty enjoyable if you go into this not expecting it to be punk.
Smash or Pass?
For Tomorrow - Smash. Actually pleasantly surprised by this song. It's not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I especially enjoy the la la la chorus, that's pretty enjoyable and catchy. I have a feeling that's gonna be stuck in my head for quite a while. Actually a pretty smooth listen to be perfectly honest. It's a good start to an album that I have low hopes for.
Advert - Smash. This DEFINITELY sounds like the kind of shit my dad listens to. The guitar sounds pretty great, the vocals are a little weird and off but I like the faster pace of this one. The vocals definitely throw me a little off on this one but other than that this is a good song. I especially like the bridge section- that part is pretty fucking cool.
Colin Zeal - SMASH. This is pretty fucking enjoyable. The wah is super good. I think this is my favourite song so far, this is pretty smooth going besides a little... flat on the vocals. Other than that yeah this is a good song.
Pressure on Julian - Pass. Yeah yikers I mean I'm definitely not as much into this song. I think the vocals are really throwing me off. It sounds pretty shitty.
Star Shaped - Smash. Definitely gives me some Oasis vibes here. Acoustic and clean guitars for this singsong time. The verses are pretty good but the chorus kind of falls short. I really am starting to not like the vocalist of this band. I think he's always just a LITTLE off key. Anyway yeah not a terrible song I'd listen to it again.
Blue Jeans - Smash. This song is pretty smooth and enjoyable. It's not exciting or fast paced or action educed. It's just a slow easy ride of a song that sounds pretty decent. I like this one a lot, especially cause the vocalist isn't trying his jeans off to sing notes he can't reach. All the respect but I just don't like when he tries too hard to sing.
Chemical World - Smash. If you made me listen to this song and try to guess the band, you could give me 500 tries and I wouldn't get it. This sounds like some Monkeys type shit with Davy Jones and all. This song is pretty interesting at least- it has a few cool parts, the verses and chorus are pretty laid back and easy going. The FUCK? All of a sudden there is a strange piano part and I like that a lot. SUPER fucking strange but I like how strange it is. I fucking LOVE this strange chaotic piano ending.
Sunday Sunday - SMASH. Big fucking smash I like this one a LOT. This might even go in my playlist. This is definitely my favourite song on the album so far. It's bouncy and catchy and has enough guitar to keep me interested. This is a pretty enjoyable song, especially compared to the vibes of the last songs.
Oily Water - Smash. This is a bit of a weird song but sounds pretty decent. I'm almost tempted to say this is my 2nd favourite song so far. It's just a super easy listen and the guitar is super against itself- I can't remember the exact term for that. Like dissonant I think. Yeah pretty good. Halfway through this song it starts to get pretty loud so I enjoy that a lot. This song made me space out pretty hard.
Miss America - Pass. This song is slower than my brain when I'm on the phone. This song is super boring and I don't particularly enjoy it. I'm about to fucking fall asleep to this damn song. This shit is so boring and slow. Honestly I skipped the rest of this song cause I did not like it.
Villa Rosie - SMASH. Finally we're back to some fast pace action high octane shit. Let's fucking go, this song is catchy as fuck. Holy FUCK never mind this might be my favourite song. This one is super enjoyable and super laid back. Never mind I don't like this one as much as Sunday Sunday but it's still really great.
Coping - SMASH. These last section of the album is getting pretty good I like this a lot. This one is another standard song that sounds pretty fucking easy and chill. There are a lot of synths or somewhatever in here that's pretty neat to hear. I like that shit. Pretty neat.
Turn It Up - Smash. I really like this last section. It's going to be hard for me to rank these with medals just because I don't remember half these songs. They sound very similar to each other, but in a good way. Yeah this is another laid back chill ass song. It's pretty good.
Resigned - Pass. Honestly like yeah I kind of expected the last song to be super slow and boring but whatever I'm really not too mad about it.
Conclusion
I was surprised by this album. I thought it was going to be absolute shit but it's actually pretty enjoyable, especially going into the end. Some of the vocals are a little too much for me but that's okay. There are definitely some songs in here that I enjoy, and I would absolutely listen to this album again. Just don't expect it to be punk rock- that is NOT what this band is. This band and this album is British pop rock, and it's honestly not bad.
RANK: B
