Oak Island - Populated nicely

Our Last Night - Oak Island (EP)

Released November 4th, 2013

Trevor Wentworth, Matt Wentworth, Alex Woodrow, Tim Molloy

Genre: Post-hardcore, Metal

Intro

This is probably the shortest album I've ever reviewed. The reason it's so short however is because it's an original release. The band had just left their previous label to record and produce this album on their own. So it's not a studio album, it's one of their own- which I think is pretty neat.

Moving on to the actual album- as per Our Last Night tradition, this album kicks ass. There aren't as many bangers on here as there are on other albums obviously because the album is short, but there are some great songs in here, and perhaps the greatest Our Last Night song to ever release here.

Thoughts & Feelings?

This album makes me feel like that one scene from Breaking Bad where Jesse gets high, and he's ascending into the sky. I am ascending into the sky listening to these songs. I am flying high on a cloud above the city and above my problems when listening to this album.

For real though, this album is amazing. It completely makes me forget about all my issues going on in life. All of these songs are your standard kickass metal songs. They are heavy, they are bouncy and fun, they are screamy at some points, and that's all you really need them to do. Unfortunately there's not a lot of solos in these songs but I don't think they're necessary.

The Wentworth's do such a great job to create groovy ass songs. I can't recommend a band more than these boys if you're a metal fan, because all of their albums and all of their songs kick ass. It's very challenging for me to find a song by them that isn't awesome. Check this album out.

Smash or Pass?

Dark Storms - SMASH. As per usual with this band, the guitar sounds absolutely incredible. Matt does such an excellent job of blending so many guitars together to always make a unique song. This is a sexy metal song, and it's super catchy. I can always remember how this song goes. Breakdown and scream section is sick.

I've Never Felt This Way - SMAAASSSHHHH. This song gets stuck in my head so often. It's so fucking good. Don't make the same mistake I did back in the day and sing this to my girlfriend at the time, because this is NOT a love song- this is a HATE song, which makes it SOOOOOO much better. Guitar is on point as usual, breakdown / scream part is on point, vocals are on point, this is just an excellent bouncy and fun hate metal song. Mwah.

Same Old War - SMAAASSHHHH. Shoutout to Joey, he loves this fucking song. It's no surprise why, because it's heavy as FUCK and is groovy as hell. Sexy ass fucking metal song. This one is really really heavy and that's exactly what we need. The chorus especially is so fucking groovy, it's VERY difficult to not sing along. The piano part midway through is sexy as FUCK. Also a great kickass solo in this one.

Reality Without You - Smash. Unfortunately this is the weakest song on the album, but it's still a good listen. The breakdowns / groovy metal guitar sections are great in this one, but the song structure just doesn't work for me. It's never a song that I would skip ever but definitely not going in my playlist either.

Sunrise - SMAAAAAAAAASSSSSSHHHHHHHHH AS FUUCCCKKKK. This is easily Our Last Night's most popular original song. This is a song that combines elements like soft piano, deep meanings / lyrics, and of course that heavy metal kickass comradery. This song is so unbelievably perfect, you need to give this one a listen. We always scream and sing this song at the top of our lungs whenever it comes on for my friends and I. Shoutout to Avery, she loves this one (and she doesn't even like metal). Yeah this is easily the best song on their album, arguably the best OLN song ever. S tier.

Scared of Change - SMAAASSHHH. I love this song. The intro is so fucking insane. Everything about this song is insane- and that's exactly how I'd describe it. Everything in this song works great. The chorus is so catchy to me. The drums are particularly great on this one. Just another great OLN song, not much to go over.

Oak Island - Smash. This song is a great ending to this album. The droning guitar at the beginning is quite neat. There are a lot of little bells in this one, which I think is pretty neat. I really like the chuggy guitar during the verses, that line is pretty neat. This one draws out a little more from it's vocals. The scream part is great of course midway through. The scream part at the END is SUPER sick. I love that kinda shit.

Conclusion

Our Last Night are at it again with their usual tricks. Kickass metal riffs, amazing vocals, heavy screaming, incredible breakdowns, and songs that are unique and stand out in a crowd. I highly recommend this album if you're a first time listener of OLN since it's so short and has such quality songs on it. Highly recommend this one, and if you enjoyed this album check out my other review that I did of their previous album- Age of Ignorance.
